Project_08: Delightfully Absurd
Delightfully Absurd is a collection of artworks created by members of the Pasadena Senior Center and residents of The Mirador Apartments, inspired by the chaotic, rule-breaking spirit of the Dada movement. From Duchamp’s repurposed readymades to Höch’s irreverent photomontages, these pieces transform nonsense into meaning—absurdity into art.
Dadaism, a radically unconventional and delightfully polarizing movement that emerged in Europe during the early 20th century, shattered traditional definitions of fine art. Artists rejected logic and reason, embracing satire, chance, collage, and raw playfulness to challenge societal norms.
Serving as a direct continuation of Project Ripples’ intergenerational programming following Emotion in Motion, this four-week course engaged participants in exploring the history, philosophy, and techniques of Dada. Taught by local high school and college students, the program guided older adults through hands-on workshops where they designed and created their very own absurd, nonsensical masterpieces.
The project culminated in a community art showcase in Pasadena, CA, featuring original Dada-inspired works from both members of the Pasadena Senior Center and residents at The Mirador Apartments.

Learn more about the impact of our intergenerational programming from participant Emmet McGuire!
Emotion in Motion was our first intergenerational program, pairing high school students with members of the Pasadena Senior Center in conversations about art history. The program laid the groundwork for our intergenerational programs to come.
